Birth of the Robots

Created from a vast trove of thousands and thousands of newly discovered pieces of footage from the early days of robotics, going back to the early 1980s. The public has never seen most of this footage. Collected from the archives of three preeminent engineers, the footage tells the story of the creation of quadrotors, RHex, CKBots and more.

The objective

World-changing technology has been born at the GRASP Lab at the University of Pennsylvania – and their early work with drones and robots contributed to many of the products that have become commonplace. Penn wanted to tell the story of the history of the GRASP lab and the engineering solutions being born there.

The solution

Penn brought in Worldview Films as one of our earlier projects. We combed through a drove of hours of video from the earliest days of the GRASP Lab going back to the 1980s to bring out the incredible narrative. By conducting interviews with the professors and leaders at the lab who had been around for many years, we built a story that captured the moment.
