Why Swarthmore?

Why Swarthmore? We asked members of the Class of 2019 to reflect on their Swarthmore journeys, and the question “Why Swarthmore?”

The objective

Swarthmore is a small, prestigious liberal arts college in Pennsylvania. Many students that get into Harvard and Yale choose this school instead for the ability to be a part of a close-knit community with rigorous academics. Swarthmore wanted to convey their uniqueness through the voices of their students.

The solution

We wanted the students we interviewed to build a strong connection with the viewers, so we used an Eye- Direct, invented by esteemed documentary filmmaker Eroll Morris. This allowed the students to look Kurtis in the eye as they looked into the camera. We asked them simple questions, like “Why did you choose Swarthmore” and went from there. The students’ passion unfolded on camera.
