Robot Quadrotors Perform James Bond Theme

Flying robot quadrotors perform the James Bond Theme by playing various instruments including the keyboard, drums and maracas, a cymbal, and the debut of an adapted guitar built from a couch frame.

The objective

The GRASP Lab at the University of Pennsylvania was instrumental in developing the early technology of consumer drones in the early 2010s. In 2012, Vijay Kumar, the leader of the lab, was asked to do a TED Talk at the annual convention in California for TED2012. Dr. Kumar wanted to end his talk with a fun videos showing off their drone developments.

The solution

Dr. Kumar and his team approached Kurtis to help turn around a head-turning video in a few days. They locked themselves in the lab filming over the weekend, and flew to California with the video on a thumb drive the next morning. The end result was a video that took the Internet by storm; and was published by The New York Times, WSJ, NBC, ABC and thousands of news sites all over the world and eventually would be featured in a number of museum installations including at the Smithsonian.
